Breast Augmentation

Regional expertise in breast augmentation.

Is breast augmentation right for you?

Dr. Steffen is a regional expert in breast augmentation. The traditional method uses a saline or silicone implant to add fullness and reshape the breast. Study after study demonstrates a strong, reliable safety profile for modern implants.

For women seeking more fullness and an improved shape, breast augmentation can be an excellent option.

What to expect

Women can choose saline or silicone implants. Incisions can be placed in the axilla, along the areola border, or under the breast (the inframammary fold). There are a wide variety of implant profiles and cohesivities available, and each option is discussed carefully so you can choose what best fits your desired outcome.

Implants are not for everyone. Natural augmentation — using your own fat from liposuction — is also available and is discussed on the Natural Breast Augmentation page.

Coverage

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons considers breast augmentation a cosmetic procedure and it is not covered by insurance (except in cases related to breast cancer).

Frequently Asked

Common questions about breast augmentation.

What are my incision and implant options for breast augmentation? +

Incisions can be placed in the axilla (armpit), along the areola border, or under the breast (inframammary fold). Implants are available in saline or silicone, with a wide range of profiles and cohesivities. Dr. Steffen reviews each option in detail with you so you can choose what best fits your anatomy and desired outcome.

Are silicone breast implants safe? +

Yes. Study after study has demonstrated a strong and reliable safety profile for modern saline and silicone breast implants. Like any implant, periodic monitoring is recommended. Dr. Steffen will review the most current safety data at consultation.

What is the difference between implant and natural fat augmentation? +

Implant augmentation uses a saline or silicone device to add volume and shape. Natural augmentation uses your own fat — harvested via liposuction from another area and transferred to the breasts — to add fullness while simultaneously trimming the donor site. Dr. Steffen is a local expert in both, and AlloClae (a structural adipose filler) is a third option when liposuction is not desired.

How long is recovery from breast augmentation? +

Most patients return to desk work in about one week and resume light exercise around three to four weeks. Heavy lifting and vigorous chest activity typically wait until six weeks. Final shape continues to settle over three to six months as the implants drop into position.

Is breast augmentation covered by insurance? +

Breast augmentation for cosmetic purposes is not covered by insurance. One exception is breast reconstruction after cancer, which is covered under federal law (WHCRA). Coverage questions are addressed during consultation.

Will I need to replace my breast implants? +

Modern breast implants are durable and do not have a fixed "expiration date." They are generally expected to last many years. Periodic imaging may be recommended — Dr. Steffen will outline the most up-to-date guidance at consultation.
