Breast Reconstruction

The heart of reconstructive plastic surgery.

Restoring form and function

Breast reconstruction is a core focus of Dr. Steffen’s reconstructive practice. He has published research on advanced techniques — including vertical inset of the latissimus dorsi flap to reduce scar burden in the “social breast” — work recognized with the Glancy Competition First Place Award at the Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons.

What to expect

Dr. Steffen will evaluate your anatomy, oncologic plan, and personal goals, and walk through the options — including implant-based reconstruction, autologous (flap) reconstruction, fat grafting, and combined approaches. The timing of reconstruction (immediate vs delayed) and staging will be tailored to you.

Coverage

Breast reconstruction after mastectomy is typically covered by insurance under federal law (WHCRA). Specifics are verified with your carrier at consultation.

Insurance & coverage

Reconstructive procedures are commonly covered by insurance. Coverage specifics are verified with your carrier as part of the consultation.

Frequently Asked

Common questions about breast reconstruction.

Is breast reconstruction covered by insurance? +

Yes. Under the federal Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA), insurance plans that cover mastectomy are required to also cover breast reconstruction — including procedures on the opposite breast for symmetry. Specifics are verified with your carrier at consultation.

What are my reconstruction options? +

Options include implant-based reconstruction, autologous flap reconstruction (using your own tissue), fat grafting, and combined approaches. Dr. Steffen will review your anatomy, oncologic plan, and goals, and walk through each option in detail.

Can reconstruction happen at the same time as mastectomy? +

In many cases yes — this is called immediate reconstruction. In other cases, delayed reconstruction may be the better option, depending on your oncologic treatment plan and individual health. The timing is determined jointly with your oncology and surgical team.

What is Dr. Steffen's research on breast reconstruction? +

Dr. Steffen published work on vertical inset of the latissimus dorsi flap to reduce scar burden in the "social breast" — receiving the Glancy Competition First Place Award at the Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. His research on progressive tension closure techniques has also appeared in Annals of Plastic Surgery.

How long does breast reconstruction take to complete? +

Reconstruction is often staged over several procedures across a number of months — with the first stage performed at or shortly after mastectomy and subsequent refinements over time. Your full timeline is mapped out at consultation.
