Patient Experience

Your experience, end to end.

Surgery is a significant decision. Here's exactly what you can expect from the moment you request a consultation to years after your procedure.

Your care path

From first conversation to long-term follow-up.

Five stages, each designed so you always know what's next — and so decisions never feel rushed.

  1. 01

    Consultation

Come as you are. Ask every question. Leave with an honest assessment and a clear next step — whether or not surgery is the right path for you.

  2. 02

    Plan

Together we build a procedure plan tailored to your anatomy, your timeline, and your goals. Pre-op guidance is explicit, written, and sent home with you.

  3. 03

    Procedure

Surgery is performed at accredited facilities, with Dr. Steffen personally performing every step. Your surgical team is the same team you met at consultation.

  4. 04

    Recovery

Scheduled follow-ups, clear recovery instructions, and direct access when questions come up between visits — or after hours.

  5. 05

    Follow-up

A long-term relationship with your surgeon. From your six-week check to years down the road, Dr. Steffen is still your point of contact.

What to bring

To your first consultation.

  • A short list of your goals and questions — written down if it helps. This is your time.
  • Any relevant medical history, medications, and previous surgical records.
  • Photos of outcomes you admire (or concerns you'd like to avoid) — optional but helpful.
  • A support person, if you'd like one in the room.
How we communicate

Clear, direct, confidential.

  • Every plan is explained in plain language. You'll leave with written guidance and a point of contact.
  • Secure messaging for non-urgent questions between visits.
  • A phone line that rings to a real person during clinic hours.
  • Clear after-hours guidance for anything urgent.
Financing & insurance

Clear answers about cost.

Reconstructive procedures are commonly covered by insurance and our staff will verify benefits before your consultation. Cosmetic procedures are self-pay, with all-in pricing discussed transparently at consultation. We accept major credit cards and partner with patient-financing companies for cosmetic work; we're happy to walk you through the options during your visit.

We never share pricing over web forms — it depends on your specific case, and the conversation is more useful than a generic number.

Frequently asked

Practical questions patients ask.

How soon can I be seen? +

Most consultations are scheduled within one to three weeks. For oncologic reconstructive cases and time-sensitive injuries, we work to accommodate you sooner. Call the office or submit a consultation request to start.

Do you take my insurance? +

For reconstructive procedures (breast cancer reconstruction, hand surgery, post-trauma care, skin cancer repair, breast reduction with documented symptoms, and more), most major insurance plans are accepted. Cosmetic procedures are self-pay. Our staff verifies coverage before your consultation.

Can I bring a support person? +

Absolutely. We encourage it — for consultations, the day of surgery, and follow-ups. Having a trusted person with you helps you remember information and feel supported.

Who performs my surgery? +

Dr. Steffen personally performs every step of every surgery. You'll meet him at consultation, and he'll be your surgeon the day of surgery and at every follow-up.

What about scar management? +

Dr. Steffen's team provides written scar management guidance tailored to your procedure, typically including silicone therapy, scar taping, and sun protection. You'll see your scar through each stage of healing — that continuity is part of what makes outcomes look like they do.

Can I reach Dr. Steffen between visits? +

Yes. Between visits, the office provides direct access by phone and secure message, with after-hours escalation guidance for urgent concerns. Please do not send protected health information through the website forms.
